Vision boards provide a fun opportunity to give yourself a daily injection of motivation and inspiration. They can be incredibly powerful for some people. I’ve used them a lot when I’ve wanted to make drastic shifts in my perspective.
Social Networks
The people we surround ourselves with on a daily basis have a huge impact on how we live our lives. As the saying goes, “Show me your five closest friends and I’ll show you your future.”
Psychology research supports this axiom. According to the book Connected: The Surprising Power of Our Social Networks and How They Shape Our Lives by Nicholas Christakis and James Fowler, studies show that if you hang around people who are overweight and unhealthy then you’re more likely to be overweight and unhealthy yourself, and if you hang around people who don’t do their homework or study for exams you’re likely to have poorer grades. We become a reflection of the kinds of people we spend the most time with. This social influence affects every area of our lives: at home, at work, at school, at a party, or wherever.
Think about your own personal goals and values. Are there any people in your life who are currently holding you back from achieving your goals? Be honest. Instead of spending a lot of time with people who make you hate life and want to give up on your goals, spend time with people who make you love life and motivate you to improve yourself.
To me, this is one of the most important characteristics in a healthy relationship. It’s also essential for achieving success. If you have the right people in your life, it will be easy to find that extra shot of motivation and support when you really need it.
We may like to believe that we can change all by ourselves, without help from anyone, but this actually limits our ability to grow and improve. It’s crucial that we have supportive family members or friends to help bring out the best versions of ourselves. Besides having an unconscious influence on us, they can hold us accountable for our actions and give us guidance and motivation during difficult times in our development.
